A hand axe is a small, simple axe or hatchet specifically designed for fighting. A Hand-axe usually has a smaller, thinner striking head than a hatchet, is more strongly made and sometimes features a steel edge forge-welded onto the iron blade. The blade itself is narrower and often longer, with a small striking edge. Most hand axes are also balanced for throwing as well as for cutting, the classic example being the famous francisca axe of the Franks during the Iron Age.
