Shield, Roundshield

This is a Viking style shield, also used by many other European tribes during the Iron Age and through the Migration Era and Carolingian period. Shields of this type were still sometimes made as late as the 14th century. Shields of this type typically have an iron boss in the center, relatively light wooden construction (often of limewood) about 3-10mm thick. They are fairly light. Some are made heavier with an iron rim and / or leather cover over the wood instead of the more usual linen.
